SYNOPSIS:
If you were a Jew escaping the Holocaust, one of your best bets to survive was to reach an intrepid group in Italy called DELASEM. Lelio Valobra, the brilliant leader of DELASEM recruits some of Italy’s boldest minds. Valobra and his men craft a network to sneak money into Italy to pay for tickets and safe houses, bribe public officials, forge documents, and most importantly not get caught by Mussolini’s henchmen. As DELASEM becomes overwhelmed, a radical Catholic priest, Father Benedetto, comes to their aid by providing resources under the Vatican’s nose. The word of DELASEM spreads, and soon they smuggle an entire orphanage to safety. Time’s up for Valobra and his Jewish compatriots when the Nazi’s take over Italy. Valobra collaborates with an unlikely hero, Father Repetto, who uses all means possible, including a Tour de France winner as a courier, to help all of DELASEM’s Jews to safety. DELASEM then becomes the hunted, and they too must find a way out of Italy. Mass Exodus is a true story. DELASEM’s efforts saved over 20,000 lives during the Holocaust. Working with renegade priests, their courageous effort was noted by impressively outwitting their enemy with narrow escapes and cunning plans.
