Three middle-aged, former tenacious colorguard champion best friends are forced to examine the lives they ended up with instead of the lives they wished for.

SYNOPSIS:

‘Backseat Debutantes’ is about the lives we end up living rather than the lives we wished for when we were young. It’s January, in the rural/suburban township of Vestal, New York. A once vibrant community filled with IBM professionals, is now almost empty since the plant closed. Some of the few who’ve remained are three thirty-something best friends – Ray Ann, April and Maureen. Their beloved fourth bestie and glue to their friend group, Olive, moved away a long time ago to Los Angeles but is returning to be honored with her best friends for their hometown Winter Colorguard competition show. Known as the -- sport of the arts -- Winterguard is an offshoot of a marching band’s colorguard, competing during the cold months inside on the gym floor. Back in the day, the teammate best friends were so tenacious on their guard squad; they were named the ‘Four Horsemen’ and lead their team to win the state championship. Fifteen years later, the three who never left town have almost forgotten what it feels like to push hard to make a dream a reality. Maureen became a wife and mother way before she wanted to and now resents herself for pushing those career goals aside for her family duties. April trudges her days along as a guidance counselor, desperate for prince charming to sweep her off her feet and take her away from living at home with her alcoholic parents. Ray Ann made it out to New York City for a while and was building an impression acting career until her mother got sick and she was pulled back in to care for her, a task apparently too huge for her cowardly, irresponsible, drug addict younger brother. With Olive returning and the public honoring of all the Horsemen, its forcing Ray Ann, April and Maureen to not only revisit their pasts with hidden issues and lost opportunities but also butt heads. And because Olive didn’t let anything get in the way of getting the “f” out, they all naively believe she will know exactly how to fix their problems. That’s only if she can get home before the big storm arrives in town. Sadly, bad weather keeps Olive away, but it ends up being the exact right disappointment for her three besties. Just the anticipation of her returning and all that Olive has done with her life, ends up pushing Ray Ann, April and Maureen to own up to the hidden, ugly truths of their lives. When the three estranged besties are honored at the Winterguard show, a long dulled fire is sparked again and they come back together like they did as a squad. It gives each of them the strength they need to be brave, fierce and strong once more to chase their childhood dreams. ‘Backseat Debutantes’ is the story of carrying confidence, courage and class through your life so that as women, we all have the courage to honor our dreams.
