SYNOPSIS:
Analysis from ScriptXpert.
MONIQUE attends her father’s funeral. From a distance, GABRIEL watches. Back at home, an ancient book - the Book of Mysteries - opens to reveal an image of Monique’s ‘true’ self. Gabriel arrives offering comfort to Monique's grief and distress. In a flashback, when BENJAMIN (her father) seeks counsel from the wise MANDRAKE, young Monique is entranced by a sacred symbol. Benjamin has discovered the Book of Mysteries, which was found in the ruins of an old library. He wants to rebuild the library and seeks Mandrake’s guidance to do so.
In her grief, Monique despairs to God. As the wisdom from the Book of Mysteries comforts her, Monique’s inner fears of death and loss are revealed. Elsewhere, MASTER VLADIMIR, the charismatic leader of the Brotherhood of Ecumenical Light, is enraged after he observes the book's wonder. He coverts the Book’s power and arranges its theft. He is brought the Book by a vassal, whom he immediately poisons to cover his tracks. Later, at the library, Monique’s assistant alerts her to the Book of Mysteries disappearance. Police investigate the Book’s theft, but Monique is compelled to investigate the Book's loss by herself. This decision places her in peril after her home is ransacked and her life threatened.
In order to achieve her goal, Monique willingly comprises her friendship with police officer GEMMA. While the police investigations to find the Book are stymied by ‘higher forces’ within the police department. Monique tenuously links the theft of the Book with the death of the vassal and confronts Vladimir, only to be stonewalled. But then, a MONK, wracked with guilt, reveals that Vladimir has stolen the Book. Vladimir unleashes a rabid criminal and assassin to kill Monique, but Gabriel intervenes only to be gravely wounded. Monique's inner fears of death rear to the surface, once again.
Later, Barnabas seeks to fulfill his 'divine purpose' to kill Monique, but she has plans of her own. Her attempts to dissuade her would-be-killer prove futile and she escapes death by mere inches as Barnabas takes his own life.
Monique confronts Vladimir who stands firm in his self-righteousness until the Book reveals Vladimir’s dark soul. But the Book of Mysteries has been ‘tampered with’. Something has been removed and Vladimir stays mute to the violation. Monique’s anger erupts as she vows to find the missing piece.
Later, Monique and the now recovered Gabriel’s love is revealed, but she remains full of the fear of loss and death. She becomes pregnant and delivers (premature) twins. One child, VERITY is gravely ill. The distraught parents consult the Book of Mysteries, and with its guidance, turn off the life support. Monique is distraught - everyone she love's dies ...
Many years later, their surviving son ALFRED (JNR) discovers a scroll hidden away in their house. The scroll contains a sacred symbol. Monique recognizes the symbol as the piece missing from the Book of Mysteries, but later that night a calamity destroys their home and Monique and Gabriel are lost. In her final moments, Monique 'sees the light' to overcome her fear of death. A grief-stricken Alfred uses the symbol to find the Book of Mysteries. He replaces the sacred symbol within the Book that guides his way forward.
