After a savage attack on a Congolese village, an American aid worker and a group of local women flee to the jungle, where they face relentless danger and impossible odds in a desperate fight for survival.
SYNOPSIS:
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, ravaged by decades of brutal conflict, is one of the most dangerous places on earth—especially for young girls and women. In a land where rape, torture, and murder are used as weapons of war, women endure unimaginable horrors at the hands of roving militias and even the Congolese Army. The ongoing violence has left millions dead and countless others displaced from their ancestral homes.
Driven by grief after the violent death of her young son, Mia, an American nurse, arrives in this war-torn region, drawn to a world where everyone has been touched by loss, and grief is the great equalizer. She finds an ally in Trudi, a seasoned Australian aid worker, but their journey takes a sudden and dangerous turn when the truck they’re traveling in breaks down, forcing them to seek refuge in a nearby village.
What begins as a minor setback quickly spirals into a full-scale crisis later that evening when the village is attacked by marauding rebels, who set fire to huts and slaughter the inhabitants without mercy. Amid the carnage and chaos, Bienvenu, a teenage boy, is taken captive and forced into the brutal life of a child soldier. Eight-year-old Emmanuel, narrowly escapes the massacre, only to be thrust into the heart of the jungle, where he struggles to fend for himself.
Mia and Trudi are forced to flee, along with three Congolese women, each carrying her own emotional scars of war. Their fates now intertwined, the group plunges into the unforgiving jungles of equatorial Africa, where danger lurks in every shadow. They endure hunger and thirst, each step through the treacherous terrain a test of their resolve. The relentless heat saps their strength, and the nights bring chilling cries of predators, both animal and human. Every moment is a delicate dance as they move silently, hiding in dense foliage to avoid detection from the bands of rebels patrolling the area.
As the days stretch on, their physical condition begins to deteriorate, but their shared determination pushes them forward. Together, they confront not only the physical dangers but also the ghosts of their pasts, finding unexpected strength in their fragile alliance. As each step edges them closer to safety—or so they hope—it will take every ounce of courage, ingenuity, and mutual trust if they are to have any chance at survival.
