At the center is Gustavo Prado, a wealthy but morally bankrupt Portuguese industrialist who smells fortune in the coming chaos. As Spain readies for a military coup, Gustavo prepares to supply the insurgents with weapons and sell wolfram — the metal that hardens steel — to the highest bidders in Germany and beyond. But Gustavo is also a man of secrets: he hides not only his political ambitions but a second family — twins born from an affair with his housekeeper, Dorotea — and is now drawing his legitimate son Martim into a criminal web of smuggling, war profiteering, and espionage.

In Berlin, Lara, Gustavo's estranged daughter raised by her mother and unaware of her full parentage, is a cabaret performer, sex worker, and underground hustler. Her intelligence and nerve catch the attention of the Nazi elite, including a mysterious Luftwaffe officer, Rudolf, who becomes both lover and gateway to power.
