When a bloodthirsty demon possesses his cat, a young man discovers the demon’s been stalking his family for centuries, and he must find a way to stop it before it kills everyone he loves, sacrifices him, and opens a portal to Hell.

SYNOPSIS:

Sharazi, a nice, unassuming guy who’s never been able to stand up for himself. He dreamed of being a writer, but is content to work as a teacher. His life isn’t exciting, but he’s happy, until it all falls apart. First, the nightmares he had as a child, red glowing eyes coming to get him, have returned. Then his fiancée, Jillian, who he doesn’t realize is pregnant, dumps him for someone more ambitious. His beloved grandmother, Neda, who was more like a mother, is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and he moves in to care for her. Ben’s nightmares not only get worse, but he starts seeing the glowing eyes while he’s awake. He becomes convinced something is stalking him. He remembers his father, who killed himself when Ben was young, also had horrible nightmares, but no one in his family will talk about it. As Neda’s dementia gets worse, she develops an interest in the occult. Led by an unseen force, she begins to research soul transference and astral projection. One day, Ben comes home to find Neda in bed. She seems to have died while performing a ritual. Her nurse’s ravaged corpse lies on the floor, and there’s blood everywhere: the walls, the ceiling, the bed. Everything is covered with blood, except Cletus, Ben’s cat, who’s curled up at Neda’s feet. Sleeping peacefully. Undisturbed by the carnage around him.

Ben’s Uncle Levi is walking up the stairs to his bedroom when he sees Cletus sitting at the top of the staircase. His eyes glow red. Suddenly, Levi sees thousands of wasps. As they sting him, Levi screams in pain and tries to swat them away, but loses his balance and tumbles down the stairs. Landing on the marble floor so hard that his neck and spine snap. Otis, his rottweiler, comes in, but he doesn’t see a paralyzed and helpless Levi. He sees a plump, juicy, six-foot steak and proceeds to devour it. Ben arrives at the scene, where Cletus was found. The police tell Ben Otis ate Levi, then something ate Otis. As Ben’s carrying Cletus to the car, he finds dog fur in his mouth. Ben’s nightmares get so bad that he can’t sleep. He goes to his great Aunt Cyra and begs her to tell him about his father’s nightmares. She shows him paintings that David, his father, made. They show red glowing eyes in a swirling mist. David believed that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a son, and that their family are their descendants. He believed that offering their family’s blood would be like offering Christ’s. Powerful enough to open a portal directly to Hell. He said demons had been stalking their family for centuries, looking for a way in. He believed they were attracted by mental illness, dementia, and suffering.

Ben takes Cletus to see Holly, a former student and friend of Neda’s. She also owns an occult store. He tells her what he suspects. At first, Holly’s skeptical, but then Cletus disappears from his carrier. She tells Ben that possession is a process. To wear the host down, the demon will torment and torture the one whom they love the most. It’ll force Ben to watch as everyone he loves dies. It usually starts with a partner or spouse, then children. Fearing Jillian may be pregnant, Ben tries to call and warn her, but she won’t pick up. She and Theo, her new boyfriend, are having an early dinner. When she gets up to get more juice, she sees Cletus, his eyes glowing crimson, sitting on the counter. Suddenly, she doesn’t see Theo; she sees a six-foot spider. It charges at her. A disembodied voice shouts, “Kill it! Kill it before it can lay its eggs inside you!” Jillian grabs a cast-iron skillet out of the sink and beats the spider to death. Covered in its blue blood, Jillian goes into the bathroom to clean up. She fills the sink, then leans down to dip her face in the water. She’s really in the kitchen, standing at the stove. Theo’s bloody, broken corpse lies on the floor. Jillian leans down and presses her face against the stove’s red-hot burner and holds it there. Screeching in pain as her face melts and her hair catches fire. Ben and Holly arrive to discover the police once again found Cletus at the scene of a gruesome death.

After Neda’s funeral, Ben, Holly, and his family go back to Neda’s to sit Shiva. When Ben’s uncle and Cyra get into an argument, Ben’s cousin Van goes to the bathroom to snort a line. When he looks in the mirror, he sees thousands of tiny worms squirming about beneath his skin, feasting on his flesh and fat. Their engorged bodies begin tearing through his skin. Van, shrieking in pain, frantically tears the flesh off his face, desperately trying to pull out the worms that aren’t there. Convinced Cletus is possessed by a demon, Holly and Ben enlist his best friend Darius, who was like another grandson to Neda, and they go to Holly’s shop to try to contact Neda. She shows them what happened. Neda was trying to astral project into her nurse, hoping to swap bodies, but she opened a portal to Hell that allowed a demon to crossover. As Neda’s essence was leaving her body, Grimalkin, a trickster demon, leapt through, accidentally slamming into Neda’s essence, and sending both of their souls into Cletus. Grimalkin is going to force Ben to watch as everyone he loves kills themselves and each other, then, when he’s emotionally gutted, it’ll sacrifice him to open a portal that will allow Lilith, the queen of demons, and her army to invade. Ben races to save his family, but Grimalkin beats him each time. Forcing Ben to watch as his mother, brother, aunt, uncle, Cyra, and her husband all brutally kill each other. Grimalkin Corners Ben, Holly, and Darius in Holly’s shop, where Ben offers his soul in exchange for their lives, only it's a trap. Ben tricks Grimalkin into stepping into a pentagram, trapping it. As Holly imprisons Grimalkin’s soul in a crystal, Ben will have to climb into Hell to save Cletus and Neda.
