In 1741, at the height of the war between Spain and England for the control of the rich Hispanic overseas territories, the Spanish Gran Admiral Blas de Lezo and his British counterpart, Sir Edward Vernon, engaged in a titanic and never seen before fight in the Caribbean.
SYNOPSIS:
Act 1 Summary
The house of Bourbon and King Philip V reigned in Spain. Despite
having conquered Gibraltar years earlier, the English King George
II longs for the rich Spanish territories of the Caribbean and, in
particular, the city of Cartagena de Indias, the gateway to
Spain’s vast and rich empire in South America. For years, Lezo and
Vernon have been fighting each other to defend their respective
countries and interests.
Act 2 Summary
Lezo not only had to contend with the most formidable naval war
machine ever seen until the Normandy landings during the Second
World war but, he also had to deal with the lack of men and means,
the stubbornness of his superior in Cartagena de Indias, Viceroy
Eslava, the separation from his loved ones, and the psychological
and physical scars of long years of battles. Lezo will have to use
all his military skills to prevent the Spanish empire in the
Caribbean from collapsing like a house of cards. Vernon, his fleet,
and his men will push the defenders to the limit and terrorize the
civilian population for weeks. The battle between two countries is
essencially a personal battle between two men.
Act 3 Summary
Miraculously, the battle of Cartagena de Indias ended with the
defeat of the English, but also with Vernon´s career and,
paradoxically, with Lezo´s own career too, which was reviled and
vilified by Viceroy Eslava. The great Spanish Admiral’s feat would
only be recognized long after his death.
