SYNOPSIS:

FBI Special Agent KEVIN STEWERT — a surfer and recent professional casualty, freshly reinstated at the Los Angeles field office — is handed a case as a pointed insult: a body has vanished from the county morgue, signed out at midnight by a funeral home that does not exist. A missing body isn't federal jurisdiction. Kevin takes it anyway.

The dead man, CHARLES MANFRED, has no fingerprints on file, no records of any kind, and a burned mansion in Palos Verdes where the arson targeted a single room and left priceless art untouched. As Kevin pulls the thread, the anomalies multiply: a Homeland Security wall around a partial print, a shredded name in Manfred's office, and a trail that leads to RAOUL SPINOZA — a multigenerational Spanish arms dealer who launders stolen art and burns collections across two continents.

What Kevin cannot yet see is the truth waiting in the South of France. In a villa above Bandol, a frail old man walks the garden each morning. He is PIETER BRUEGEL THE ELDER — the sixteenth-century Flemish master — alive after five centuries.
