Devastated and numb, John navigates the grueling immediate aftermath—making painful phone calls to their children and relatives while a thunderstorm breaks outside. Unable to sleep at 5:00 AM, John picks up a pen and writing pad to begin writing to Olive, desperately seeking a connection to his lost bride. He reflects on the day they first met 35 years earlier as patients at the James Connolly Memorial Hospital (Blanchardstown Sanatorium) in the 1960s.

The narrative weaves fluidly between John’s present-day grieving process in 2001 and his budding 1966 courtship with Olive during their nine-month stay in the sanatorium.

Seeking solace, he speaks with a wise 92-year-old neighbor, Mary McGee, who comforts him with the idea that Olive’s presence is closer than ever. Throughout his daily life—reconnecting with his son, meeting a mysterious down-and-out stranger who delivers a poetic message in St. Stephen's Green, and hosting Olive's "month's mind" memorial party—John continues writing daily letters to his late wife, reaffirming his love.
