WAKAMOURA NO. 4 BRIDGE
By HIROO(寛夫) OTSUBO(大坪)

GENRE: Horror, Drama
LOGLINE:

A college student who follows a fixed riverside routine begins repeatedly encountering a high school boy standing alone on Wakamoura No. 4 Bridge during rainy days. Each time, he intervenes to prevent the boy from jumping—but his concern is less about saving a life than preserving something only he can perceive on the bridge.

SYNOPSIS:

The protagonist, a college student, maintains a strict routine of walking along the Wakamo River to Wakamoura No. 4 Bridge to drink canned coffee. On rainy days, he begins to encounter Akira, a troubled high school student who stands on the bridge contemplating suicide.

Seemingly acting out of concern, the protagonist talks to Akira, offers him drinks, and even brings him home to be comforted by his own parents. These interventions appear to be genuine attempts to deter the boy from throwing himself into the swollen river.

Despite this, during a severe typhoon, Akira ultimately jumps to his death. The protagonist resumes his usual walk and approaches the bridge, revealing a dark secret: he possesses the ability to see the ghosts of those who drowned in the river hanging from the railings. He views Wakamoura No. 4 Bridge as his personal "collection," curating the hanging spirits according to his own twisted whims.

The protagonist confronts Akira's ghost, revealing that he only tried to save him because he found the boy's despair ordinary and did not want his spirit disrupting the bridge's aesthetic. Annoyed by the ghost's presence, the protagonist burns the spirit's hand with a lit cigarette, forcing it to drop into the dark water to disappear forever, before calmly continuing his routine walk.
