In the endless expanse of space, an interplanetary ship sails with a close-knit crew. They are pioneers from Mars, eager to explore the young planet Terra. Yet the journey is long, and the cosmos holds countless mysteries. Moreover, dangers may arise not only in space but also aboard the Hoboken itself.

SYNOPSIS:

The novella “The Voracious Maw, or Who’s There in the Distance?” tells the story of a journey aboard the interplanetary ship Hoboken, undertaken by a group of astronauts. They are pioneers, driven by curiosity, exploring their solar system. Their mission is to travel from Mars to the planet Terra, where intelligent life might exist.

As the story unfolds, it is revealed that the space voyage is, for now, only a simulation of real actions. The astronauts at the Unity Space Flight Center are undergoing the final stage of testing—a hyper-realistic simulation that creates a shared virtual reality for the team. Within this environment, the Hoboken crew lives, works, studies space, pilots the ship, discusses life on Terra, reflects on the universe and its mysteries, and encounters emergencies—all to prepare them as fully as possible for a real spaceflight.

During one such simulation, a malfunction occurs, causing a psychological trauma to one crew member. Despite this, he remains part of the team, which later leads to tragic consequences.

Nevertheless, Unity’s leadership decides to proceed with the mission, and the Hoboken sets off with its crew on a journey to the planet Terra.
