THE MILES THEORY

THE MILES THEORY
By Michael Pelkey

GENRE: Thriller / Suspense, Crime
LOGLINE:

A Portland journalist becomes fixated on a convicted serial killer whose calm, clinical murders once terrorized the city, and as she begins interviewing him after his death sentence, a disturbing connection forms—one that pulls her toward the truth of who he is, and who she might be.

SYNOPSIS:

In 1981, psychiatrist Dr. Miles Middleton quietly kills a young patient in what he believes is an act of mercy, marking her with his signature infinity symbol. Decades later, Miles is convicted of twenty-three murders and sentenced to death, drawing the attention of investigative journalist Meredith Lyons, whose stillness and intensity catch Miles’s eye as he’s escorted from the courthouse.

Despite her mother’s warnings to let the past die, Meredith pursues a deeper story—one that the prosecution never uncovered. She secures exclusive weekly interviews with Miles, becoming the only journalist he agrees to see. Their first sessions reveal a chilling intimacy: Miles speaks with clinical clarity about his victims, while Meredith’s reactions suggest a personal resonance she can’t explain.

Meanwhile, Detectives Green and Parsons discover a new death bearing Miles’ exact, never-released signature, raising the possibility of a copycat—or an accomplice. As they quietly reopen the case, Meredith’s private investigation intensifies: her apartment wall is covered with maps, pins, and patterns only she can see, and her behavior begins to mirror Miles’ in subtle, unsettling ways.

By the end of the pilot, Malcolm senses something familiar in Meredith, and Meredith—alone in her apartment—places a single black pin on her wall, marking a decision she doesn’t speak aloud. In a final cross-cut, she and Miles sit in identical stillness, mirroring each other across prison walls.

The pattern has begun again.
