GORDON: THE ROAD TO KHARTOUM

GORDON: THE ROAD TO KHARTOUM
By Adam Kuhl

GENRE: Period Piece, Military/War
LOGLINE:

A fiercely independent British officer is tasked with leading a mercenary force in rebel-held China, but as the horrors of war and empire unfold, he defies his superiors and risks his career to fight for his own sense of justice.

SYNOPSIS:

At the height of empire, one man’s sense of duty will carry him to the edge of history—and beyond it.

Gordon: The Road to Khartoum charts the extraordinary rise of Major General Charles George Gordon, a brilliant yet deeply conflicted British officer whose life is defined by action, faith, and an unyielding moral code.

From the brutal trenches of the Crimean War to the reforming halls of Scutari, Gordon’s path first crosses that of Florence Nightingale—whose philosophy of discipline, compassion, and rational courage challenges his belief in duty through suffering. Their relationship, built on mutual respect and ideological tension, becomes a defining counterpoint throughout his life.

Drawn east by war and opportunity, Gordon is thrust into the chaos of China’s Taiping Rebellion, where he transforms the ill-disciplined “Ever Victorious Army” into a precise and formidable force. His victories are decisive—but come at a moral cost, as he confronts corruption, brutality, and the consequences of imposing order through violence.

Returning to Britain as a reluctant hero, Gordon finds himself unable to exist in peace. His sense of purpose leads him to Sudan, where he is tasked with dismantling a vast network of slavery and corruption embedded within the very systems meant to govern it. There, alongside allies like Romolo Gessi and Emin Pasha, he wages a relentless campaign against both human exploitation and institutional decay—only to discover that true reform may be impossible within a broken system.

As Gordon’s methods grow harsher and his isolation deepens, a new force rises in the desert: Muhammad Ahmad, the self-proclaimed Mahdi, whose religious movement will soon challenge imperial power itself.

Back in Britain, political pressure mounts following a catastrophic military defeat in Sudan. The government turns once more to Gordon—not to conquer, but to withdraw. Yet those who know him understand the truth: Gordon does not retreat.

Framed by the final hours of the Siege of Khartoum, this film traces the journey that forged the man history would immortalise—revealing the contradictions, convictions, and consequences that led him there.

A sweeping historical epic of war, morality, and legacy, Gordon: The Road to Khartoum stands as a complete and powerful story in its own right, while setting the stage for its companion film, Gordon: The Siege of Khartoum, which continues and concludes his fateful final stand.
