POSSIBILITY: TOXIC
By Timmy Hunter-Kilmer

GENRE: Thriller / Suspense
LOGLINE:

Robin didn't exactly mean to evade a chemical hazard quarantine, in the service of hanging out with friends. That doesn't make anything better.

SYNOPSIS:

Robin lives on something of a peninsula. One road in and out, no alternate routes, and a largely-automated factory that means the flow out is usually heavier than the flow in. So biking on the side of the road to social engagements is something of a habit.

Thing is, this time the difference is stark. A few trucks (all hazmat, not that this is casually obvious) coming in, and the traffic out is bumper to bumper. Initially, that just makes the choice easy, especially when the friend Robin is planning to visit gets a look at the situation, through Robin's phone, and says "Looks like a mess, but you can avoid it!"

In some ways, perhaps. Once Robin has reached the mainland proper, the quarantine becomes clear. A chemical spill, and one that works a little like ozone: no natural neutralization, easily spread, harmful to humans. Do not approach without hazmat gear. Seek medical attention promptly, if exposure is suspected.

And finally, Robin stops taking dodges, the easy way out, slipping between the rules that make up a civil society. Time to go to the first responders, admit to the accidental evasion, and hope that any recovery will be straightforward.

The toxicity here is obviously twofold, both the substance and the relationship. It is also intentionally ambiguous whether or not Robin has, in fact, come into contact with that chemical spill—the symptoms will be available for perusal, whether or not that is possible for the audience, but Robin will deliberately refuse to examine that. Out of rational judgment: anxiety can produce its own psychosomatic symptoms, and best to avoid inducing nausea, headaches, blurred vision, et cetera.
