When the Lee family loses their middle daughter, Yoon-seo, in a sudden accident, grief nearly breaks them apart. It takes months of quiet, hard work — for parents Do-hyun and Hye-seok to find their way back to each other, to their surviving children, to the good memories underneath the loss — before they can function again as a family. On the advice of a friend, they begin attending a grief counselling group for people who have lost loved ones, hoping it might help them do what they can't yet do alone.

There, they meet Seo-ah Kim — a young woman working through grief of her own. As she opens up to the group week after week, the Lees find themselves drawn to her, and then unsettled by her: the way she speaks, small unconscious mannerisms, a laugh caught in the same place their daughter's used to catch. What begins as a passing resemblance hardens into conviction. They come to believe it's a sign — that some part of Yoon-seo has found its way back to them, wearing a stranger's face.

Desperate for certainty, they turn to a shaman recommended within their circle of grief. The shaman and her assistant, Min-jun, perform a reading and confirm what the Lees already need to believe: that Yoon-seo's spirit has returned, using Seo-ah's body as a vessel home. Armed with that confirmation, Do-hyun and Hye-seok grow closer to Seo-ah at every session, their grief easing for the first time in over a year, buoyed by a truth they never once think to question.

Then, one week, Seo-ah doesn't come.

Unable to bear losing their daughter again — not now, not after finally getting her back — the Lees do the unthinkable. They abduct Seo-ah and bring her home. She wakes chained to a bed in a house that isn't hers, facing two people who speak to her with heartbreaking tenderness, utterly convinced that what they're doing is an act of love rather than a crime. They call the shaman and Min-jun back, this time to examine Seo-ah in person and confirm, once and for all, that Yoon-seo is present within her.

But the examination reveals the truth at the rotten center of everything the Lees have built their reunion on: the shaman and Min-jun are frauds — con artists who prey on the grieving for money, fluent in exactly the kind of hope a broken family will pay any price to hear confirmed. Faced with Seo-ah in the flesh, afraid, chained, and utterly human, they do what they've always done. They tell the Lees precisely what they want to hear: that Yoon-seo is here, and that she wants to stay.

And the Lees, having already crossed every line to get her back, choose — again — to believe them.
