When a critically ill baby is born to undocumented immigrants in Laredo, Texas, at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day, she becomes a national flashpoint in the war on drugs and immigration reform — igniting political tensions that ripple across a volatile border where human tragedy and cartel power intertwine.
Traffic, Sicario.
SYNOPSIS:
Mother of Exiles is a psychological crime thriller that weaves the political complexity of Traffic with the gritty intensity and drug wars of Sicario.
On New Year’s Eve in Laredo, Texas, undocumented immigrant Marie Sanchez gives birth to a premature baby with a rare heart defect. When the child — dubbed “Baby New Year” — becomes the first recorded birth of the year, she ignites a national firestorm over a sweeping amnesty bill that would grant citizenship to millions of undocumented immigrants.
Across the country, lives begin to intersect:
Mitch Bartlet, a powerful D.C. lobbyist championing the bill, is devastated when his daughter is killed during a convenience-store robbery by Madaleno Alvarez, an undocumented immigrant and the son of a high-ranking enforcer of the Mexican cartel. Consumed by guilt and rage, Mitch hunts Madaleno down in Mexico, kidnaps him, and drags him back across the border — an act that blurs the line between vengeance, justice, and law.
Meanwhile, Gretta Rosmar, an undocumented housekeeper, struggles to protect her teenage daughter Arianna and young son Markez when an immigration raid tears their family apart. Detained and separated, Gretta’s children flee south; Arianna, now pregnant, clings to hope in a country she barely remembers.
Paul Andrews, a recovering addict and ex-Marine wounded in the same robbery that claimed Mitch’s daughter, joins the Minutemen — a civilian border-patrol militia — in a desperate attempt to reclaim purpose. But his relapse spirals into catastrophe when a confrontation at the border ends in tragedy for Arianna.
As the media turns Baby New Year into a national symbol of hope, unseen political forces exploit the story to manipulate public opinion. A staged bombing at Laredo Medical Center — where Marie’s family is being honored for their child’s symbolic citizenship — becomes the horrifying catalyst that finally pushes the amnesty bill through Congress.
In the aftermath, the intertwined stories reveal a nation divided between compassion and fear, vengeance and forgiveness — exposing the fragile humanity beneath the headlines.

MOTHER OF EXILES sounds interesting and thrilling, Richard Recco! Your logline is really long (70 words). I suggest keeping your logline to 35 words or less/around 35 words and one or two sentences.
