A FLORIDIAN'S GUIDE TO COMING OUT
By Yan Ju Zeng

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

After a sinkhole swallows her school, a closeted Florida teen's survival plan spirals into chaos when she fake-pursues her new school's Prom King- who happens to be dating the very girl that makes her question everything.

SYNOPSIS:

ANDREA “ANDY” SALMON (17), a Chinese adoptee marooned in suburban Florida, believes her survival depends on being the perfect, straight daughter. When a sinkhole swallows her old school, she’s thrust into the chaotic, proudly queer ecosystem of CYPRESS BAY HIGH. Horrified, Andy doubles down on her denial, dismissing her instant chemistry with artistic, observant QUINN.

Under pressure from her intensely supportive but painfully awkward parents, BETHANY and STERLING—who are, unbeknownst to her, patiently waiting for her to come out—Andy makes a reckless bet with cynical JESS to prove her heterosexuality by dating popular jock LUCAS. What follows is a montage of disaster: allergic reactions, concussions, and arson, all while her friendship with Quinn deepens.

The façade crumbles at a chaotic bar's teen night. After Lucas gently rejects her (having begun a sweet romance with Andy’s best friend, NATE), a humiliated and tipsy Andy shares a breathtaking, public kiss with Quinn. She flees in a panic, believing her life is over. The next morning, a devastating confrontation with her parents reveals the tragi-comic truth: they’ve known she was gay for years and were just confused by her sudden “boy-crazy” act. Their love is unconditional, but their phrasing was catastrophic.

Embracing her truth, Andy finally asks Quinn out on a real, sober date. At the school’s absurd “Create a Creature” fair, they present Floridavis Magnificens—a proudly homosexual bird—and win second place, their kiss now a quiet victory. As their eccentric teacher chases the first-place winner (whose flying manatee defies all science) across the courtyard, Andy and Quinn stand still, hand-in-hand, finally at home in their own strange, wonderful story.
