On May 15, 1992, two Croatian pilots in the Yugoslav Army, flew with two planes MIG-21 into the free Croatian territory. Months prepared action was achieved in almost impossible conditions and in a very complex situation. On the human side, this is a story about great challenges, endurance, courage, discernment and the right decisions in a given time, all on the edge with many obstacles, which at first seemed insurmountable.

SYNOPSIS:

On May 15, 1992, two Croatian pilots in the Yugoslav Army, Ivica Ivandić and Ivan Selak flew with two planes MIG-21 into the free Croatian territory. Months prepared action was achieved in almost impossible conditions. Ivica and Ivan lived in the same building, they were part of the same squadron. In the fall of 1991 Ivica became the father of young daughter. The war in Croatia (which separated from Yugoslavia) was raging. The situation is becoming increasingly complex. They began to plan flight to the Croatian side a few months earlier. Ivica is still in mid-1991, said to Ivan, "You're not going without me?" But it still took a lot of months to make that happen. At that time they didn’t know that as soon as one of the pilots went to the other side, watching others were boosted. Counterintelligence Service (KOS) throw in its informants like they are their neighbors. The situation sometimes was so heated that they had to watch out for even what they think. It was also happened strange, questionable things. In October 1991 Ivan experienced a plane crash in which two of his colleagues burned. He was the only survivor. Because of that he had to wait for license to fly several months, and he got it in March in 1992. They knew that they should be awake and wait for the right opportunity. Finally, it appeared in May 1992. Under the pretext that they do not have relatives in Serbia, Ivica's wife and six-month daughter went to Germany to wife's uncle, so they succeed to leave Serbia. Ivan and his wife made a fake divorce, so she went to Croatia. The key moment of decision came on 15.5.1992. In preparation for the celebration "Days of Yugoslav Air Force", a part of the squadron (eight planes by four pairs), rehearsed the program. The team was flying with Ivica, but in the beginning Ivan had not been included in the program. Finally, when one pilot dropped out due health problems, Ivan joined the last pair of planes. In the planning of flight Ivica and Ivan didn’t talk, even look themselves. They knew that became a decisive moment. The first flew Ivica. According to the regular arrangement he was waiting for Ivan's confirmation that he had flown. They both knew that this confirmation has a special meaning for them. While Ivica was flying in circle around Serbia, waiting for confirmation, it started problems with the fuel. Finally, when confirmation arrived, Ivica was redirected the plane to Croatia. Soon, Ivan also separated from his pair going to Croatia, too. On the other hand, he had too much fuel. Finally, they both landed happily.
