A veteran's last road trip before his planned suicide gets derailed by a hyper hitchhiker that encourages him to use his desire to die to try increasingly thrilling adventures.
SYNOPSIS:
Ben Hutchington, a disillusioned, burned-out math teacher and veteran, has decided to kill himself. Tired of being humiliated by entitled students (especially the manipulative and violent Claire), ignored by authority, and haunted by trauma from his time in Afghanistan, Ben meticulously plans his suicide—right down to the dosage of sleeping pills.
But just as he begins his final road trip to die under the sequoia trees, he's interrupted by Zoe, a chaotic, unpredictable young woman who reads his suicide notes over his shoulder in a diner, eats his fries, steals his car keys, and eventually strong-arms her way into his life.
Zoe, a manic vagabond with no boundaries, becomes an unlikely partner in Ben’s final days. She mocks his pill plan as “lame” and challenges him to try something dangerous and unexpected instead—like cow tipping or petty theft. Ben, with nothing left to lose, reluctantly plays along.
What begins as absurd misadventures—running from a farmer, stealing snacks from a gas station, evading the police—slowly unearths something deeper. Zoe sees Ben’s trauma and suicidal thoughts not as romantic but tragic and wasteful. Ben, despite himself, starts to feel flickers of connection, purpose, and even amusement.
Just as Ben starts to show the faintest signs of re-engaging with life, Zoe insists he become a vigilante “suicide superhero,” dying in a blaze of glory while fighting crime. Ben shrugs it off but doesn’t say no—and their dangerous plan begins.
