By Jay A Swendris

GENRE: Science Fiction
LOGLINE:

SYNOPSIS:

THE LAST STARFIGHTERS (HBO / MAX Feature) The Setup and Recruitment

SAM ROGAN, 18, is trapped in a frustrating Nevada small town, spending his evenings beating the high score on an old arcade cabinet to escape the chaotic life ruled by his equally frustrated used-car salesman father, LEWIS. Sam's only bright spot is his playful relationship with JAIME. His victory on the high score board immediately calls a sleek, futuristic car driven by the sharp, smirking alien RYLA. Ryla reveals that the game was a test, and Sam's reflexes qualify him as a Starfighter. Hesitant but intrigued by the promise of adventure, Sam agrees to leave.

The Retreat and The Crisis

Ryla rockets Sam off-world, leading to a brief, terrifying exposure to Outpost Nine. Overwhelmed by the intense, militaristic atmosphere—especially the President of Rilos declaring "Victory or death!"—Sam realizes the fight is real. Panicked, he demands Ryla take him home.

Back in Nevada, Sam faces immediate double trouble: Jaime slaps him, mistakenly believing he cheated on her. He then finds a mechanical replica of himself, a BATEA UNIT, assembling itself in his room, intended as a placeholder while he was away. The crisis escalates when a heavily armored FATA TERMINATOR attacks their apartment. Working together, Sam, Lewis, and Jaime manage to destroy the unit. Lewis, seeing Sam's potential, encourages him to go back and use his talent, while Jaime shares a poignant farewell kiss. Sam and Ryla immediately depart, using the transport to escape the inevitable follow-up attacks.

The Legacy and The Call to Action

Ryla attempts to return Sam to Outpost Nine, only to find the station destroyed. They are rerouted to a secured location near the Star League homeworld (Rylos). Sam is met at Landing Pad 9A by the original Starfighter hero, AMBASSADOR ALEX ROGAN, and his family: wife MAGGIE and fiery daughter, SEREN.

Sam discovers that Alex’s original Gunstar defense force is nearly wiped out, leaving only three Gunstars remaining. Sam is horrified, refusing to take on the responsibility. Alex and Seren press him, arguing that while his high score was just a game, the war is coming and they need him now. Realizing the devastating stakes, Sam reluctantly agrees to join the fight.

Sam, now part of Gunstar One, is put through grueling training runs by Seren, who acts as the navigator and co-pilot. His abilities begin to sharpen. During a drill, an urgent message comes in: the Ambassador's ship is under attack. Without waiting for orders, Sam and Seren recognize that it’s time to level up and engage.

The Strategic Return to Earth

After the engagement, Alex and Sam reconcile, deciding to bring the remaining family members (Lewis and Jaime) back with them to the Star League homeworld before the ultimate war begins.

To secure this, Gunstar One breaks formation and makes a dramatic, roaring landing back in the Nevada desert field. An older Lewis, having heard the low hum, rushes to the site, dragging Jaime along. Lewis is shocked but overjoyed to see his long-lost brother, Alex.

Sam and Jaime share an emotional reunion. Alex assures Lewis that the visit is brief—they came back to bring them out to the new headquarters. Sam says a final goodbye to Earth, and as the crowd cheers, Lewis and Jaime are brought aboard the Gunstar.

The ship pierces the atmosphere, joining the other two remaining Gunstars. Sam and Alex, side-by-side in the cockpit, share a nod. Their journey together is just beginning as the small fleet arcs toward the Star League homeworld.

FADE OUT.
