DESERT HOSPITAL

DESERT HOSPITAL
By Fatima Abdolhamid

GENRE: Military/War, Thriller / Suspense
LOGLINE:

In a war-torn desert field hospital, a traumatized painter obsessed with the memory of a woman tries again and again to finish her portrait — but each time he reaches her waist, the chaos of battle and the ghosts of his past shatter his mind, pushing him toward madness.

SYNOPSIS:

Desert Hospital follows a man lying in a makeshift medical tent somewhere in a burning desert front. Surrounded by the stench of blood, iodine, gunpowder, and the distant roar of mortars, he tries to recreate the image of a woman he once adored — her black hair, her stormy eyes, the curve of her spine, the “rainbow arch” of her lower back. Every detail feels sacred to him.

But each time he reaches the core of the portrait, something breaks. His hand freezes. His thoughts scatter. His mind dissolves into memories of obsession, guilt, and war. The woman’s body becomes a battlefield of symbolism: her spine like the racehorse that ruined his grandfather, her lower back like a monument of desire, her hair tasting of bitterness. He lives inside a hallucination of her — and inside the violence of the front line.

As he draws, he hears the helicopters, the mortars, the screams of soldiers outside the tent. His sketch collapses. He crushes it in his fist. Then he tries again. And again. At his feet lies a graveyard of crumpled papers, each ending at the same point: her waist. The war outside mirrors the war inside his mind — both chaotic, both unfinished.

Unable to complete the portrait yet unable to stop trying, he lies back on the hospital bed staring at the fan blades shredding flies above him, wondering how to imagine the rest of her. The story ends with his unresolved terror:

he has lost her image in his mind, and without it, he is losing himself.
