A middle-aged woman copes with feelings for a man she just met and the impending death of a dear friend as her husband has a psychotic, drug induced breakdown. As she contends with her friend's inevitable demise, every move she makes could either set her free or put her life in jeopardy.

SYNOPSIS:

Audrey Eidelmann’s best friend, Valerie Chenoweth’s, cancer has returned and the diagnosis is terminal. Nick Adler, Valerie’s nephew, also gets the news and flies to Colorado to be with his aunt. As Audrey and Nick share precious moments with Valerie, Richard Eidelmann, Audrey’s husband, smokes pot and has affairs. Audrey realizes how lonely her life is when her college aged daughter spends her entire college break with friends, her son is too busy to visit and Richard is never home.

At a dinner party, Richard hires Nick to do computer and security work. This gives Nick a glimpse into Audrey’s unhappy life. Richard’s habits spiral out of control when he meets a model and tries cocaine. He quickly becomes addicted to both as Audrey copes with Valerie’s deteriorating health. With no one else to turn to, Nick and Audrey grow closer and eventually fall in love. However, they hide the feelings they have for each other. Audrey finds out about Richard’s affairs and is devastated. Richard falls in love with his mistress and starts to have mixed feelings for Audrey. He is verbally abusive, but unnaturally possessive. The behavior disturbs Nick and makes him fear for Audrey’s safety. Nick’s concern for Audrey is amplified when he is fired by Richard for coming to her defense.

Valerie knows Nick and Audrey are in love and makes Nick promise that he will leave with Audrey once Valerie passes away. Nick is reluctant but eventually makes the promise. Valeria passes away, but Audrey is not there because Richard steals her cell phone and keys. Audrey moves into a spare bedroom and the marriage is officially, but not legally over. After the funeral, Nick and Audrey open a box that Valerie left for them. They, talk, laugh, cry and eventually make love. Audrey is conflicted and leaves. Several days later Audrey arrives at Valerie’s house to pick up items Valerie left for her. Nick tells Audrey that he loves her, offers her a ring and asks her to marry him. She tells him she can’t and leaves. Back home, Audrey realizes she is miserable and starts to plot her escape. However, when she tries to log into her bank account, the password has been changed.

Audrey steals a key from Richard’s key chain, waits for him to go to work, then sneaks into his office. Audrey discovers that Richard has been stealing from his law firm and from their accounts to support his mistress and drug habit. Audrey is devastated, but then terrified when she finds a life insurance policy on her life. Richard discovers his key is missing and comes home. Knowing that Audrey has discovered his secrets, Richard tries to kill Audrey but she escapes in her car. Richard pursues her. There is a high-speed car chase, then a horrific car crash. Richard is killed. Nick visits Audrey in the hospital and leaves her the wedding ring. One year later Nick and Audrey are in Costa Rica. They are married. They bury Valerie’s ashes on a beautiful Costa Rican mountainside.
