SYNOPSIS:

How the Light Got In tells the true inspired journey of Nadine Keaton, a sharp, funny, determined woman whose life is upended when she suffers a massive stroke while on a work trip in Amsterdam. Forced into sudden dependence and grueling rehabilitation, Nadine confronts the loss of her physical abilities, the shattering of her independence, and the emotional wounds she’s carried for decades, including abandonment by her biological father and the absence of her beloved mother, her soulmate.

After returning home to California, Nadine undergoes months of physical, occupational, and speech therapy, supported by an extraordinary circle of family and friends. She rebuilds her life step by step: learning to walk again, drive again, re‑enter work, and reclaim her identity. Determined not to let the stroke define her, she creates a list of ten bold personal goals, from horseback riding to archery to singing in front of an audience; each one an act of defiance and rebirth.

Along the way she becomes a “big sister” to a young girl named Alana, regains connection with her estranged biological father shortly before his death, and, unexpectedly, discovers love with Liam, a gentle, grounded cowboy whose own scars make him the first partner she hasn’t felt the need to run from. Their relationship challenges her independence and forces her to reconsider what strength truly looks like.

Just as she begins to accept a future that includes vulnerability, commitment, and joy, Nadine receives devastating news: her recovery has reached its medical limit. In the grief that follows, she dreams of her mother, who reminds her that brokenness is not a flaw but the place where light enters.

Empowered by that realization, Nadine embraces the life she has; imperfect, different, but still deeply hers. She completes her goals, opens herself fully to love with Liam, and learns that healing isn’t about going back to who she was but becoming someone new: resilient, whole, and lit from within.

How the Light Got In is a poignant, often humorous, deeply human story about survival, identity, chosen family, and the courage it takes to build a beautiful life after everything falls apart.
