PLAN B - (PILOT)

PLAN B - (PILOT)
By B. E. Davis

GENRE: Drama, Comedy
LOGLINE:

PLAN B is a half‑hour, single‑camera comedy about a charismatic yet chaotic life coach and a rag‑tag group of dreamers whose big careers have just spectacularly crashed. Forced to enroll in a struggling community center’s Plan B program, they embark on ridiculous field trips, hilarious experiments and heartfelt self‑discovery to find the lives they never knew they wanted.

SYNOPSIS:

When Benny Davis, an enthusiastic but financially strapped motivational speaker, loses his business (and apartment) overnight, he takes the only gig he can find: running a city‑sponsored program designed to help out‑of‑work adults reinvent themselves. He expects to inspire a few late bloomers; instead he gets Jade, a burned‑out esports prodigy with no idea who she is without a username; Priya, a former CFO whose sarcastic wit hides her fear of failure; Omar, a once‑famous musician now busking for change; Tanya, a disciplined ballerina whose injured ankle ended her future with the Bolshoi; and Luis, a retired accountant whose family won’t let him alphabetize spices in peace.

The pilot opens with a comedic montage of each character’s professional implosion. From the moment they arrive at the dilapidated community center, it’s clear that the Plan B program is as much a lifeline for Benny as it is for them. The group’s awkward ice‑breakers and messy vision‑board exercise gradually melt their cynicism, but when a stern program director threatens to shut the class down unless Benny shows measurable success in six weeks, the stakes become real. Benny takes the group on a chaotic job fair field trip where each member unexpectedly excels at something new—Jade climbs a wall, Priya lands laughs, Omar slings falafel, Tanya discovers aerial circus skills, and Luis bonds over chess. Benny even attracts the attention of a career‑transition executive. The twist: Benny confesses that he’s just as lost as his students, setting up a journey of collective reinvention.

Over the course of Season One (ten episodes), the “Dream Team” explores a different profession or life skill each week—culinary arts, firefighting drills, circus school, tech hackathons, nonprofit volunteering, retirement planning. Through these misadventures they confront cultural expectations, generational divides and personal demons. Benny’s own arc sees him partnering with the executive he meets at the job fair, but the partnership threatens the authenticity of the program. Jade wrestles with whether to please her family or herself, Priya tests the viability of a creative career, Omar tries to monetize music without losing his soul, Tanya learns to let go of perfectionism, and Luis discovers that retirement can be the start of something, not the end. The season builds toward a community showcase where the group must prove to the city (and to themselves) that Plan B isn’t failure—it’s resilience.

PLAN B combines the heartfelt optimism of Ted Lasso with the character‑based absurdity of Community. The single‑camera format allows cinematic visuals and quick cuts. The humor is grounded in truth: the cringe of failing publicly, the absurdity of corporate jargon, and the warmth of unlikely friendships. At its core, the series celebrates second chances and embraces the idea that failure is universal; each episode opens with a comedic glimpse into a character’s backstory or future misadventure, then dives into the group’s weekly challenge.

Market Position

Streaming audiences crave uplifting, inclusive series with binge‑worthy momentum. PLAN B speaks to anyone who has ever pivoted professionally or personally—an especially broad demographic in the wake of global economic upheaval. Its diverse ensemble and international flavor give it global appeal, while its workplace‑comedy structure provides endless episodic possibilities. The show can live comfortably on a streaming platform or cable network seeking a four‑quadrant comedy with heart.
