SYNOPSIS:

Night Market is a community-powered dramedy set entirely in Houston that turns sound into its comic engine and blue hour into its visual heartbeat.

Setup: MAYA TRAN, a precision-obsessed Viet-Cajun chef, soft-launches her driveway pop-up Heat Luck in Third Ward with her crew: DRE COLEMAN, a warm deadpan barber/sound tinkerer; LU DELGADO, a DIY fabricator whose janky brilliance actually works; and PRIYA SHAH, a brand wrangler with neighborhood instincts. When their generator dies, Dre clips a mic to the stockpot and routes the butter sizzle through a tiny speaker—the neighbors stay. That intimate sizzle becomes the film’s sonic signature and comedic game: be delicious without getting loud. The moment also catches the eye of EMBER GRIGGS, a glossy influencer-restaurateur who performs a “friendly safety check” for her followers, telegraphing future trouble.

Back at Tran Family Bakery, Maya’s mother MAI reveals a brutal deadline: renew the lease within three weeks or lose the shop her late husband built. Across the neighborhood, Dre’s Barbershop gets a one-week termination notice—legacy under threat, cash required. The crew needs a bold, shootable plan that can generate real money and goodwill fast.

Climax (City Hearing): Ember’s lawyer argues the market is a disruptive, unscalable festival. The crew counters with neighbors over numbers: Priya drops a banker’s box of stamped passports and a one-page flow; Lu diagrams safety; Maya and Mai demonstrate the Elders First service chain; Dre rolls in the SPL meter and plays the sizzle at 66 dB—a living proof of concept. Isabel verifies the reading. When asked to speak, Ember withdraws her objection—she won’t kill a neighbor-forward plan. The commission renews the permit with conditions and instructs Isabel to template the program citywide.

Resolution: Blue hour becomes a habit, not a stunt. The market runs smoother, not bigger. Elders lead a slowed two-step; Isabel finally dances; Priya sits and eats while her system hums without being pushed; Dre’s barbershop signs a human-scale lease; the bakery inaugurates “Quiet Hour”—phones down, forks up.
