A disgraced journalist, desperate for redemption, is sent to a remote Michigan lake town to cover a family-owned business’s milestone celebration – only to uncover a buried secret that could destroy them all.
SYNOPSIS:
Act One:
A mysterious light awakens a young girl on a farm in rural Michigan in 1925. What she
discovers in the barn is something extraordinary that will change her life and the town
forever. Cut to present day Detroit, where we find Zak Washington, once a rising star
reporter, now struggling to find his way back to relevancy at Detroit’s biggest paper. While
his bitter rival is dispatched to interview the President, Zak finds himself relegated to
writing a profile on the Newlight Water Company and the founding family of Big Springs,
Michigan, the Newmans. Entrenched in this sleepy lake town, Zak begins to unravel the
strangeness of life in Big Springs – a throwback to a time where diversity doesn’t seem to
exist and the odd residents never leave their hometown. His first encounter with Patty
Newman and her family only fuels his fire. It’s here where he also meets the two people
who will help him uncover the truth – Grace Harper, a young teacher at the high school,
and William Walker, a homeless vet who once worked for the Newmans.
Act Two:
A flash back to Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12, 2017, illuminates how Zak’s once
promising career took a sudden turn as he becomes part of the story on that fateful day of
Neo-Nazi hate. Back in Big Springs, Zak continues to dig into the story of the Newman
family, with each encounter stranger than the last. Meanwhile, the Newman family is hard
at work on preparations to expand their products across the Midwest …with designs on
going national. Following a brief excursion with Grace to the friendly confines of Franklin, the next town over, Zak and William embark on a harrowing mission to break into the
Newlight Water Plant. William is steadfast that Zak needs to see “it” for himself. The two
men successfully gain access to the facility until a surprising discovery triggers the alarm,
and the duo are forced to flee the scene. Split up, Zak is captured by the Newman’s and is
forced to face the failures of his past in a cold jail cell. It’s here where Patty Newman
shows him her true nature and everything changes for him. As this is happening, William
has successfully used his military training to evade capture… or so he thought.
Act Three:
Now forced to leave Big Springs, Zak is confronted by a frantic Grace with disturbing news.
The two heroes formulate a plan to reveal the sinister truth behind Newlight Water and are
thrust into high-stakes situations that will test their resolve in ways they can’t imagine. The
town of Big Springs is putting the final touches on the big Centennial event, with every
detail carefully overseen by Patty Newman. Following their foolish attempt to force Patty’s
mute husband, Larry, to talk, Grace and Zak narrowly escape the Newman army and
retreat to the supposed safety of Franklin. It’s here we learn that no one or no place is truly
safe from the reach of the Newman family. Despite the obstacles they face, Grace remains
determined to help Zak uncover the secret, at the risk of her career and her life in Big
Springs. The story concludes with the Centennial event, as Zak’s article on the town known
as Bath City USA hits the wire. Is this the reinvention that he hoped for or something else?
