In WWI Belgium, an idealistic American zoologist joins a relief mission and discovers the German High Command is using his research to justify war, forcing him into a brutal world of espionage and betrayal.
SYNOPSIS:
Selection is a tense and gripping exploration of the human spirit, set against the backdrop of one of history’s darkest chapters. It questions the limits of morality, the cost of war, and the nature of survival when confronted with the worst of humanity.
Set during the early years of World War I, Selection follows HARVEY STEERMONT, an idealistic American zoologist who volunteers for a humanitarian mission in Belgium, believing his scientific expertise and compassion will help alleviate the suffering caused by the war. What begins as a noble mission quickly spirals into a nightmare as Steermont is pulled into the brutal and morally ambiguous realities of the conflict.
Harvey's journey takes him to Belgium, where he witnesses firsthand the devastation of war. Initially tasked with providing relief to war-stricken civilians, he soon realizes that his role involves more than distributing food and aid. Under the control of German forces, Belgium is a hotbed of espionage, betrayal, and violent repression. Harvey is confronted with a new reality where the line between good and evil blurs, and survival requires hard choices.
In his encounters with the Germans, particularly the cold and ruthless MAJOR ALLENBACH, Harvey is exposed to war crimes and atrocities, including the brutal treatment of Belgian civilians. His initial belief in the civilized nature of war and the honour of nations crumbles as he witnesses horrifying acts, such as the massacre of innocent civilians. Major Allenbach, who embraces a twisted form of "survival of the fittest," serves as a dark foil to Harvey’s once-idealistic worldview.
Meanwhile, Harvey's interactions with the enigmatic JENNE DE BELVILLE, a local resistance member, pull him deeper into a world of espionage. Her dangerous ties to the underground movement make Harvey an unwitting participant in their covert operations. He is torn between his duty to provide humanitarian relief and the increasingly perilous world of espionage he cannot escape.
As the war intensifies, Harvey faces impossible choices that test his morality and survival instincts. He is forced to confront his own complicity in the violence and destruction around him, as well as the true cost of neutrality in a world consumed by war
