A recent widower in his early 60’s looks for a new purpose and direction as he faces a life without his partner of 40 years and leans on a female friend for guidance. She gets caught in the crossfire as her professional advice and knowledge of his marriage backfire on them both.
SYNOPSIS:
Darrell has lost his wife of 40 years suddenly. After the funeral, he is rudderless and searching for meaning and direction as he attempts to learn how to live on his own. He leans on Penny, a friend of his and his wife. She is a busy and successful literary agent at a small publishing company, never married, and also looking for a productive path for the rest of her life.
As she helps him, he helps her, and they are forced to confront a real truth: they are falling in love with each other. Darrell feels a sense of betrayal as he contemplates moving forward romantically, and Penny is caught in the middle as she knows his wife was preparing to leave him, but died unexpectedly prior to doing so.
Penny encourages Darrell to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a writer. He decides to take her advice, leaves his successful and lucrative career, and jumps in headfirst. He presents his first draft to her and eagerly awaits her response. Her trademark response to inept prose - You Kinda Suck - runs through her mind as she reads. What to do? What to say?
Darrell decides to get to the truth of her opinion and is devastated to learn the reality of the situation in his newfound passion and his decades-old marriage. As he questions all of the decisions he’s made since his wife’s death, an old work friend is a fountain of wisdom. Darrell’s newfound perspective lead him to a new realization and provides the exact advice he needed, resulting in a joyful reunion with Penny and a Number One New York Times Best Seller - the self help book dedicated to recent widowers looking to move forward in life: You Kinda Suck.

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh ahhhh, thank you so much for saying that. I am so NOT a rom-com consumer but my wife has really encouraged me to try my hand at something. So inspiration struck today and I'm off and running. Thank you for the kind words and rating. They are very encouraging.

You're welcome, Darrell Pennington, I know what you mean. Out-of-genre experiences can be fun and surprising; I know I don't consume horror but I'm strangely good at it, it could be the same with you and romcoms. Have fun!
