Geoff, Penny’s cousin from Kentucky, is also her best friend. The eight-year-olds enjoy an uncommon bond and relationship and explore their world with wide-eyed enthusiasm and curiosity. When an argument at an Easter brunch results in Penny’s mother stabbing her sister, Geoff’s mother, in the hand with a fork, a rift between the two prevents Penny and Geoff from seeing each other for a decade.

A chance meeting at Western Kentucky University during the orientation for new freshmen rekindles the relationship between the two. But each has changed dramatically over the ten years they were apart, and the relationship faces rocky moments. When a fight between the two results in another separation, a serial killer brings them back together unexpectedly.

Penny’s roommate is a student in the forensics department and an internet sleuth on the side. Her fascination with the case draws Penny in as they begin investigating the brutal murders. Geoff and Penny’s lives intersect again. He wants to help solve the case and protect his cousin and friend. She wants to enjoy the celebrity and fame that will surely grace all of the people involved with the bizarre case, making worldwide headlines. The race is on to solve the case and no one is prepared for the killer’s identity when it is revealed.
