RECORDINGS: THE DEAD AND BURIED

RECORDINGS: THE DEAD AND BURIED
By Emmanuel Jomy

GENRE: Thriller / Suspense, Mystery
LOGLINE:

After a notorious serial killer dies in a mysterious fire, a criminal psychologist must decipher five survivors’ wildly contradictory testimonies — all haunted by an impossible rainstorm that never happened — only to discover the killer’s deadliest weapon was never violence, but the complete destruction of truth itself.

SYNOPSIS:

When serial killer Elias Vane perishes in a fire beneath the abandoned Saint Dymphna Psychiatric Facility, authorities believe his reign of terror has finally ended. For years, Vane — a respected psychiatric nurse — abducted victims within a two-mile radius of the crumbling hospital, staging their bodies with ritualistic precision. There were never any survivors.

Until now.

Five people emerge alive from a hidden underground ward, each offering a completely different account of their ordeal. One claims Vane was protecting them. Another swears a woman was the true abductor. Timelines fracture, locations shift, and the structure of their prison changes between statements. Yet two details remain eerily consistent: every abduction occurred near Saint Dymphna, and every survivor remembers a violent, unrelenting rainstorm — thunder, flooding hallways, dripping pipes, and the chilling refrain, “Rain makes everything honest.” Weather records show clear skies on every relevant day.

Assigned to review the recordings, criminal psychologist Dr. Nancy Crawford initially attributes the inconsistencies to trauma. But as she digs deeper, she uncovers Vane’s obsession with the fragility of memory and perception. Using his medical expertise, Vane had carefully selected victims who were already taking scopolamine or related compounds for legitimate reasons. In the depths of the facility, he engineered an artificial storm — white noise, constant dripping water, cold mist, and sensory deprivation — to dissolve their grip on reality and implant personalized false memories while they were chemically vulnerable.

The killer’s true masterpiece wasn’t murder. It was creating uncertainty so perfect that even after his death, the truth could never be known.

As Nancy pieces together the horrifying puzzle, she listens to a final recording left by Vane. What she discovers forces her to question everything — including her own unraveling mind. Because in the silence of her office, with clear skies outside, Dr. Nancy Crawford begins to hear rain.

And it is getting louder.

Emmanuel Jomy That’s a seriously compelling logline, Emmanuel. The phrase “the complete destruction of truth itself” gives it a psychological weight that feels bigger than a conventional serial killer thriller. It suggests the real horror isn’t just what happened, but whether reality itself can still be trusted.

I also really like the “impossible rainstorm” detail because it instantly creates intrigue and atmosphere without overexplaining. It feels cinematic and unsettling in the right way.

Tonally, it gives me the feeling of a grounded psychological mystery with almost surreal undertones the kind of concept where perception becomes the battleground. Definitely sounds like a project that could stand out if the screenplay delivers on the tension and ambiguity promised in the logline.

Would be very curious to know whether the contradictions come from trauma, manipulation, or something even stranger.
