A disillusioned mediator on the verge of self-destruction is forced to confront the unexpected impact he's had on others when he wakes in a mysterious limbo, guided by a peculiar figure who reveals the hidden ripples of his past encounters.
SYNOPSIS:
Evan Baker (42), a once-successful mediator, wakes up in his apartment, unshaven and disheveled. He calls out of work, barely able to muster the energy to care. At dinner with his sister, Jenny, and her husband, Pete, Evan meets Eve, a coworker of Pete's they hope he’ll connect with. But Evan deflects with sarcasm, disengaged from his own life.
The next day, his firm forces him to take a mandatory leave of absence and attend therapy. That night, drowning in self-pity, Evan drinks himself into oblivion and stumbles into his garage. He starts his car and lets the fumes overtake him, slipping into unconsciousness.
Evan awakens in a strange, colorless space—a gray room. Across from him sits Mr. Gray, a sharp, cheerful man in a gray suit. Evan demands answers, but Mr. Gray is unfazed. He explains that Evan is at a crossroads: his life is not over yet, but whether he continues or disappears forever depends on what he learns here. Mr. Gray offers Evan a chance to see the impact he’s had on the people he’s met. Reluctantly, Evan agrees, and his journey begins.
In the second act, Evan's life chronicles many of the major US and world events in which he had a sometimes small and sometimes meaningful part in. These include the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the invention of the web browser in 1992, the Columbine Massacre in 1999, September 11th in 2001, the rise of Facebook in 2004, Lehman Brothers bankruptcy in 2008, Edward Snowden leaks in 2012, the ouster of Harvey Weinstein in 2017, the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, and lastly the rise of ChatGPT in 2022.
Through all of these seminal moments, Evan learns of his positive influence on not only the people involved, but his bigger impact across the globe. He realizes that not only does he have something to live for, but he cannot do it without help.
Evan awakes in his garage with Paramedics performing CPR and his brother-in-law Pete looking on anxiously while talking to Jenny on the phone. Days later, in the hospital, Evan admits to his sister that he needs help, and they commit to supporting each other.
