CHARLIE SAVES THE BLOCKBUSTER
By Matthew Ruth

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

When his small-town Blockbuster faces closure, a cinephile film enthusiast must organize a makeshift drive-in festival to save the store—only to discover that sometimes the real story isn't about winning, it's about finding your way out.

SYNOPSIS:

Charlie Harris is a twenty-something film devotee working at a struggling Blockbuster in rural Pennsylvania, still reeling from his father's death years earlier. When corporate informs him the store will close in sixty days unless rentals increase by forty percent, Charlie refuses to accept defeat. Inspired by a forgotten poster for a long-defunct film festival, he hatches an ambitious plan: revive the Sunrise Film Festival as a drive-in event at the abandoned Apple Patch Drive-In Theater.

With help from his coworkers Tina and Derek, and an unexpected ally in Lindsay—a mysterious young woman who visits the store daily—Charlie transforms the derelict drive-in into a venue, painting the screen and scrounging for classic films. Just when their efforts seem futile, acclaimed filmmaker Frasier Freeman rolls into town and offers to premiere his new film at their festival, complete with funding to secure the property.

But when corporate interference forces Freeman to withdraw at the last moment, Charlie's dream crumbles. Desperate, he turns to Derek's homemade film—a project he had previously dismissed—and enlists Lindsay's help to score it. Together, they create something genuine and moving.

As five thousand people descend on the drive-in for opening night, Charlie realizes the festival's true purpose: it wasn't about saving the Blockbuster, but about saving himself. With his film school dreams reignited and Lindsay by his side heading to Los Angeles, Charlie finally leaves his small town behind, carrying his father's Mustang and the understanding that sometimes you have to break the rules to find your way forward.
