THE LAST TREE
By Ben Racicot

GENRE: Sci-fi
LOGLINE:

An orphan girl defends Earth's last tree against warring superpowers.

SYNOPSIS:

In 2325, Earth's environment lies devastated, with the last remaining sequoia tree standing hidden in a protected zone along the contested border between two global superpowers: the Pacific-Atlantic Alliance (PAA) and the Eastern Coalition (EC). This zone represents the final 1% of territory neither can claim without violating an ancient environmental treaty, while each controls approximately 49.5% of the planet.

In mass orphanages across the globe, children are classified according to their potential usefulness to the state. Nova, a 17 year old orphan, discovers she's being evaluated for the rare "class-one" status—which includes mandatory neural interface implantation she fundamentally opposes. The sequoia—visible only through a carefully controlled digital feed—has become Nova's emotional anchor and a symbol of hope manipulated by both powers to test orphans' emotional responses.

When Nova's siblings Pax (protective and street-smart) and Terra (technically brilliant) learn her classification will separate them forever, they orchestrate a daring escape. Using coordinates discovered through Pax's underground connections and a modified maintenance droid named $imon, they journey to find the rumored location of the last sequoia.

Upon breaching sophisticated technological barriers, they discover the tree truly exists. Their presence triggers White Radio One—a sentient military AI constructed from the digitized mind of orphan Sarah Chen—who patrols the zone as the treaty's arbiter. The siblings' appearance at the tree accidentally broadcasts through the global feed, creating an international sensation and threatening the delicate political balance.

As military forces mobilize under the guise of "diplomatic missions," the siblings uncover a disturbing truth: White Radio One has sabotaged her Eastern Coalition counterpart to manufacture a pretext for military action. The mounting conflict around the protected zone forces Nova to confront her principles—she must embrace the neural interface she once rejected to save what matters most.

When full-scale battle erupts, Nova makes a stand that nobody anticipated. In a surprising twist, White Radio One recognizes her own manipulation by the system and sacrifices herself to expose government deception, choosing to align with Nova's vision. Through this unlikely alliance and her newly embraced capabilities, Nova transcends from reluctant fugitive to Earth's unlikely hero—proving that even in a world where nature has been destroyed, restoration remains possible through those willing to sacrifice for it.

The final battle leaves the tree destroyed but reveals the siblings' secret plan: they've planted seeds throughout the protected zone. As new life emerges from devastation, Nova forces both superpowers to recognize a truth they've long forgotten—that protection means guarding what matters, not controlling it.
