Archeologists Jane Ramsay and Peter Strobel have just been hired to go off-world and explore the remains of an advanced alien civilization that mysteriously vanished. What they don't know is that the thing that wiped out this civilization is still there, lurking in the shadows.
SYNOPSIS:
CONCEPT: A blend of action, science fiction and horror. The explorers encounter something unseen and dangerous during their mission. The exact cause of the danger on the abandoned planet remains mysterious and hidden for most of the movie. The story is suspenseful and frightening precisely because it plays on the very primal human fear of the unseen and the unknown.
SYNOPSIS: The story opens in Boston, 80 years in the future, at Harvard. A class on archeology/past civilizations is being taught by JANE RAMSEY. JANE theorizes that each of the past civilizations disappeared because of cataclysmic events. The class ends.
Department chair ARTHUR SCOTT enters and is excited about something, asks Jane and her T.A. PETER DAVENPORT to join him in his office. MICHAEL WOLFSON with Colonial Space Administration enters. JANE is confused about why MICHAEL is there. There is tension between PETER and MICHAEL about “Colonial” exploiting other planets and land for financial gain. MICHAEL tells the group that they have been searching for a habitable planet and they found one (Kepler 16-D), with an abandoned, man-made structure already on it. He asks JANE and PETER to explore and discover if there was indeed a cataclysmic event.
JANE and crew begin the journey. There are 14 in the crew (PHELPS, NAKATA, BRUEGEL, BOSCH, WOLFF, SANCHEZ, ODEGOV, SHAH, LAHM, KUREISHI, RAWLINGS, FITZGERALD, DAVENPORT, RAMSEY).
After a 1 ½ in cryosleep, they arrive at their destination – Kepler 16-D which is almost entirely covered by water and enshrouded by fog.
It’s on the planet surface where they discovered two mysterious, windowless alien structures. The team of scientists sets up camp, determined to uncover the mysteries of this vanished alien species – and whether they’d experienced an extinction level event. Although their initial scans of the planet indicated no signs of life - there are still inhabitants in the structures, waiting to discovered.
