SYMPHONY FOR A DAY (SHORT FILM)

SYMPHONY FOR A DAY (SHORT FILM)
By Minh Nguyen

GENRE: Musical, Drama
LOGLINE: At an international gathering of young musical prodigies, a mute Vietnamese pianist and an African trumpet player trapped under his father’s expectations form an unexpected bond, discovering that music can speak deeper than words.

SYNOPSIS:

Inside a prestigious observatory hosting some of the world’s youngest musical prodigies, KEVIN (16), a gifted Vietnamese pianist who lost his voice after an accident, arrives isolated and withdrawn. A visible opening in his throat causes the other students to stare at him with discomfort and curiosity. Among them is OUSHNA (15), a brilliant African trumpet player raised under the crushing authority of a strict and violent father who sees his son’s talent as the family’s path to dignity and recognition. On the first day, the organizers ask the students to form pairs for the final performance. While the others avoid Kevin, Oushna quietly chooses him without hesitation. Their communication is difficult at first. They do not share the same language. Kevin cannot speak. They exchange awkward glances, gestures, fragments of translated sentences on their phones, each writing first in their native language before slowly trying to understand the other. But during their first rehearsal alone together, something shifts. Through the piano and trumpet, they begin to communicate in a way neither of them can explain. Notes become responses. Rhythms become questions. Silences become understanding. For the first time in a long while, both boys feel truly heard. As the day unfolds, their connection deepens through small moments: wandering through the city at night, laughing in the streets, running without purpose like children briefly freed from the weight of their lives. By the time they step onto the stage for the final performance, the concert is no longer about prestige or talent. It becomes the expression of two wounded lives resonating together for one fleeting day. Symphony for a Day is a story about silence, pressure, loneliness, and the fragile miracle of finding someone who understands you beyond words.
