SYNOPSIS:

ACT ONE

Ben Bailey, 29, has built exactly the life he thinks he wants: a stable job as a process engineer, a comfortable Philadelphia apartment, and a loving relationship with Sophie Snow. Predictability suits Ben, and with marriage beginning to enter Sophie's thoughts, their future seems almost predetermined.

Then Sophie's mother, Claire, comes to visit.

Ben prepares obsessively for their first meeting, determined to impress the woman whose approval matters so much to Sophie. But when Claire steps off the train, Ben is blindsided. At 47, she is warm, affectionate, effortlessly beautiful, and immediately comfortable with him. His attraction is instant, unwanted, and increasingly difficult to conceal.

Sophie's friend Andrea notices Ben's strange behavior, while Ben finally confesses the truth to his best friend, Chance: Claire is a ten. Ben insists attraction means nothing. He loves Sophie, chooses Sophie, and intends to keep it that way.

Then Claire extends her visit through the weekend.

ACT TWO

With Chance now watching for evidence, Ben resolves to stop avoiding Claire and simply behave normally. During a Saturday outing with Sophie, Claire, Chance, and Andrea, the strategy initially works. Ben is attentive and affectionate with Sophie, but his growing ease with Claire becomes impossible to ignore. Sophie, delighted that the two people she loves are connecting, unknowingly keeps bringing them together.

That evening, Sophie takes things further. Believing Ben and Claire should have genuine time to know each other, she sends them to dinner alone.

Claire uses the opportunity to learn whether Ben is truly serious about her daughter, but her affectionate personality and unintentionally suggestive phrasing leave an already-conflicted Ben completely misreading the conversation. When Claire finally asks whether he loves Sophie, Ben discovers he cannot answer.

He returns home and packs a suitcase.

The breakup leaves both Ben and Sophie confronting lives they had assumed were settled. While Sophie begins reclaiming their apartment and building a life without him, Ben leaves his job and retreats to a hotel. What had once seemed comfortably easy suddenly proves painful to lose.

Claire eventually confronts Ben. She knew he was attracted to her and deliberately tested whether he could keep Sophie at the center of their dinner. His attraction wasn't the problem. His inability to answer the question was. Claire refuses to help him win Sophie back. Unless Ben can return to Sophie with a truth more meaningful than "I don't know," he shouldn't return at all.

For the first time, Ben stops trying to preserve the life he has and decides what he actually wants.

ACT THREE

Ben returns to the apartment, where Sophie is already transforming the home they once shared. He apologizes for how he handled Claire's visit and admits that his attraction wasn't simply desire for another woman. It disrupted a comfortable life he had mistaken for a chosen one.

Ben tells Sophie that he cares deeply for her, but she isn't the person he should spend his life with, and he hopes he isn't that person for her either.

To his relief, Sophie agrees.

They part with affection rather than bitterness, accepting that loving each other doesn't mean they belong together. Ben leaves his keys behind and walks away from the safe life he once believed was enough.

Later, Claire receives two dozen chrysanthemums and a simple card from Ben thanking her and telling her she is beautiful.

At Philadelphia International Airport, Ben waits alone. No Sophie. No Claire. No last-minute romantic rescue. With passport and ticket in hand, he boards his flight.

Photographs reveal where Ben's journey takes him: overseas on a mission trip, digging ditches, building, cooking, and playing with children. The dream he once abandoned because "this is where life brought me" has become the life he finally chose for himself.
