SYNOPSIS:
In a fenced society born from the ashes of war, every citizen carries a number, and once a month a machine draws one. Whoever is holding the room when their number lights up dies — and whoever kills them earns passage, with two loved ones, to the paradise everyone has been promised but no one has seen. A barber wins the draw by taking a stranger's throat with his razor, and is sent off with his two children to begin a new life. A month later, the officer who processes these "winners" draws his own number — and instead of letting the ritual run its course, makes one last, quiet act of defiance to save the people he loves.
