Fighting destiny, a mother taps into her subconscious to bring light to her blind son.
SYNOPSIS:
THE MOTHER
Alice is the elegant and educated wife of David, who is a painter. Their once passionate marriage is now sour because their four year old son is blind. David is superstitious and believes the child is accursed. This bitterness drives him to alcoholism and leads to frequent and violent quarrels.
Alice rejects the authority of God because she believes God made her child blind. Instead, she holds a radical conviction that the subconscious is omnipotent and omniscient. She believes that dreams and thoughts created the world. She is certain her subconscious will prevail to bring sight to her son. David disagrees and believes that only destiny determines their lives.
On a crucial day after a heavy fight, Alice tries to end her life. She believes her eyes will give sight to her son. David is alarmed and rushes to the hospital with the child and the dying Alice on his shoulders. Things go weird. The police arrest David for murder and he is jailed. The boy is sent to the care of a social organization under the orders of the court.
While in jail, David transforms and longs for his son. Later he is acquitted and gets possession of the boy. He nurtures the child keenly. Alice’s apparition appears in the boy’s dreams and induces in him great knowledge about the life after death. The boy learns about dark energy and dark matter.
When the time comes for him to get his physical sight, he rejects it. He states he has an innermost eye to distinguish things better than those who have eyes. He prefers to remain blind. While he is engaged in research with a Russian girl who is his fan, he invents a device which can give sight to the blind.
He becomes famous. When he is honored, the elderly David retreats to his forgotten studio. He draws the picture of Alice as the mother who is stretched throughout the universe. He completes his painting and writes his signature under the title The Mother and dies.
