LOGLINE:

A workaholic father and his rebellious high school dropout of a son join forces to save their family's shopping mall from being destroyed by an enigmatic shopkeeper and his shop full of eclectic trinkets.

SYNOPSIS:

The Brookfield Mall in Upstate New York has had its fair share of shootings, birthday celebrations, and vacancies over the years. At the helm, Jason "Jay" Kaufmann struggles to maintain tenants amidst a depression, Amazon, and the aftermath of a pandemic. Fueled by his desire to save the mall, Jay agrees to lease a space to antiques broker Ashton Clause, a mysterious man with a sweet voice and persuasive choice of words. However, Jay's son, Derrick, a rebellious skateboarder punk with a GED, (who just so happens to work at the mall), notices something odd about Ash's unusual calm demeanor. He questions Ash, in which, the latter reveals he knew Derrick's deceased mother, just before she was killed in a car crash, that Derrick believes was no accident. Derrick pleads for his father to listen, but Jay's stubborness wins. He shuts Derrick out, until his secretary Kathy is killed in a mysterious car explosion, that Derrick believes is Ash's doing.

On Ash's grand opening day, Jay, Derrick, and his girlfriend Lisa, explore Clause's unusual store and purchase a few trinkets, after some heavy persuasion from Ash. These "decorations", however, turn out to be sinister, and almost kill Lisa in a freak elevator accident. As Jay and Derrick begin to look further into Ash's origins, one by one, tenants begin disappearing left and right, including Derrick and Lisa's best friend and depressed store manager, Jesse. The three eventually find him, in Ash's clutches, where he reveals to the group that he plans to destroy the mall, and remake it into his own image, inspired by his hero, Victor Gruen.

While Jay and Derrick work on distracting Ash to free Jesse, Lisa, Jay's second wife, Jessica, and the remaining mall personnel try to evacuate the mall. Narrowly dodging Ash's deadly traps set around the place (exploding soda machines, acid-laden fountains, and twisted mannequins, Lisa and Jessica manage to lead the remaining tenants to safety, after maintenance man Billy, sacrifices himself to clear a path for the group to escape. Meanwhile, Ash taunts Jay using his dead wife Sydney's image and mortally wounds Jesse. However, after Ash transforms Derrick into his own personal hellhound, Jay gives up his soul, and the mall in exchange for Derrick and his friends' safety. Ash agrees to the proposal, but, in a sudden change of heart, he decides to keep Derrick as his new pet to continue his quest to eliminate the "bastard developments" across the nation. As he prepares to leave, Jesse volunteers himself to save Derricks life and promises Ash, that he will help him build the mall that Gruen always envisioned. Ash agrees and lets Derrick go. He takes Jesse with him and, out of an act of pity, decides to spare the mall as a "gift" to Jay.
