SYNOPSIS:
Set in a small, struggling town during the Great Depression, Behind the Face tells the story of four adventurous nine-year-old friends who share a deep bond despite the harsh realities of their time. Their lives take an unexpected turn when their reclusive and bitter neighbor, Mr. Harlan, falls gravely ill. In his final moments, the children come to his aid and call for a doctor. As Mr. Harlan dies, he murmurs the cryptic phrase: "my treasure." Intrigued and convinced that Mr. Harlan had hidden something valuable in his country house, a place he visited on occasion, the kids decide to embark on a daring adventure. Leaving behind their worried families, they journey through the rural American landscape in search of what they believe is a hidden fortune. Along the way, they face challenges in the wild, bonding over their shared struggles and discovering more about the world around them. After days of adventure, they finally reach Mr. Harlan's country house and break in, expecting to find riches. Instead, they uncover something far more profound—a closet filled with old photographs of Mr. Harlan's long-lost wife and child, who had tragically died in an accident. Among the mementos, they find a letter titled “My Treasure,” in which Harlan pours out his heart, revealing that the true treasure of his life was the love he once had for his family. The children return home, changed by the journey and the emotional truth they’ve uncovered. They come to understand that the real treasure wasn't wealth, but the memories and love that shaped a man who had grown bitter from loss. Reuniting with their worried families, they carry with them a new perspective on life, loss, and the things that truly matter. Behind the Face is a poignant coming-of-age story about adventure, loss, and the discovery of the true meaning of treasure.
