A professor of Religious Studies mocked for her absurd research leads a delusional homeless veteran and a priest who enjoys topless bars on a quest to discover testiculus Christi, a relic that will change their lives.
SYNOPSIS:
Dr. Haley Berkshire is a "nullifidian" professor of Religious Studies whose research is criticized for its absurdity. Jesse Morales is a homeless man, suffering from PTSD, who believes he is the Second Coming. Father Brian William Callum Robert O'Shea is a much-admired priest whose parish is unaware of his infatuation with a topless dancer named Simone.
At an academic conference, Haley announces a startling discovery: the Gospel According to Trevor, which describes a previously unknown wound suffered by mortal Christ on the cross. "As God is my witness," she proclaims, "I vow to you that I will discover the Testicle of Christ!" Brian sees the announcement in a religious periodical and Jesse in a newspaper which serves as his blanket. All three decide testiculus Christi can be found in New York.
Haley’s train trip east (she's afraid to fly) is interrupted by her mother's death, prompting a detour to Houston. Jesse, hopping trains or hitchhiking, performs apparent miracles along his way. Brian brings Simone on his trip, and must endure her seductive efforts until she decides to bail.
All three end up at a religious rally at Temple University. Haley gets kicked out after questioning the evangelists, O'Shea quickly follows when his actions are misinterpreted, and Jesse is ejected after overturning the temple in protest of the hypocrisy. Over dinner, they decide to team up.
In Central Park, they encounter a former advertising executive named Phineas (meaning "oracle"). His disjointed glossolalia about donuts, cannibals, and furniture seems to suggest they must fly to the torch of the Statue of Liberty on a rainy night. When Jesse's dreams stir memories of his military service, he appropriates a helicopter, but lightning strikes the chopper's "Jesus nut" and the aircraft tumbles violently into the Hudson River.
They survive and are arrested. Jesse's former commanding officer convinces the judge and DA to drop the charges, but the characters part without the relic they sought. In a denouement, we see their new lives, the unexpected by-products of their journeys. In short, they went in search of the Testicle of Christ and, instead, found themselves.
