THE CHRISTMAS CHANCE

THE CHRISTMAS CHANCE
By Lauren Hackney

GENRE: Romance, Comedy
LOGLINE:

After a breakup leaves her reeling, a thirtysomething is coerced into a ‘12 Self-Care Dates ’til Christmas’ challenge - but when her ex and a charming local doctor both reappear, she’s forced to choose between old love, new beginnings, and finally putting herself first

SYNOPSIS:

Laura and her three best friends love to party and embrace the young, fast-paced life of New York City. But Laura has one weakness: she adores being in love at Christmas. This year, she finds herself dumped at Halloween and feeling utterly miserable.

Enter her grandmother, who challenges Laura to truly practice self-care this holiday season. If Laura completes twelve “self-care dates,” her grandmother promises to introduce her to a handsome, single doctor - someone Laura might just fall for in time for Christmas dinner.

From cozy holiday cooking classes to quirky charity events, Laura’s twelve dates are more hilarious than heartfelt. Along the way, she must navigate meddling friends, a frenemy with a hidden agenda, a toxic ex, and the chaos of holiday traditions. But as the festive season unfolds, Laura discovers that sometimes the greatest gift isn’t under the tree… it’s a second chance at love.

It's long-winded. Right now it’s more of a mini-synopsis than a sharp logline. The stakes feel soft: if she doesn’t complete the dates, what actually happens? The “greatest love story is with herself” is the tagline of dozens of similar stories, and blurs the specific into the universal too soon.

Unique Christmas Rom-Com, @Lauren!

I think your logline could be tightened up some. I also think "discovers the greatest love story might be the one she writes for herself" is vague. I suggest explaining that part some more.

Something like: As a heartbroken woman completes 12 self-care dates before Christmas for a chance at love with the charming local doctor, she reconnects with herself and discovers _______________.

Or this: As a heartbroken woman completes 12 self-care dates before Christmas for a chance at love with the local doctor, she reconnects with herself and discovers _______________.

And really, I think you only need "A heartbroken woman agrees to complete 12 self-care dates before Christmas for a chance at love with the charming local doctor" as your logline. I think you could save the rest for your synopsis and pitch.

Thank you E Langley I'm still learning and I appreciate you letting me know this. Hmmmm... I'll go back to the drawing board and see what I come up with! Thank you!

Maurice! This is excellent to know - I can delete half of the logline and it still works?!?!?! You're amazing! Thank you! Yes - this is the Christmas Rom-Com I've been trying to write to push myself to try new genres. I don't expect too much from it being my first try but I'm willing to stick with it and work on better drafts. Thank you so much!

You're welcome, Lauren Hackney. There are a lot of Christmas Rom-Coms, and I think your concept stands out. I'm looking forward to watching THE CHRISTMAS CHANCE!

you may be the only one Maurice Vaughan according to the logline interest! hahaha :) thank you for always being in my corner and helping through all of this. Loglines aren't my strong suit!

You're welcome, @Lauren. Loglines are tricky sometimes, but they get easier with practice in my experience.
