BOYS OF THE BURNING SKY
By Frederick Rauschenbach Jr

GENRE: Period Piece, Military/War
LOGLINE:

BOYS OF THE BURNING SKY is the gripping untold true story of a group of young wide-eyed cadets chasing the dream of flight. Nothing to lose and everything to prove. From Pensacola’s sun-bleached runways to the burning skies of Okinawa, they must forge a brotherhood in the cockpit of their Corsairs and turn the raw Marine pilots they lead, into a lethal combat force to defend Allied troops and each other in one of the bloodiest battles of WWII.

SYNOPSIS:

BOYS OF THE BURNING SKY follows a tight-knit group of U.S. Marine Corps aviators whose bond is forged in the flight schools of Pensacola, tested in the cockpits of their F4U-1D Corsairs and proven in the crucible of World War II.

Beginning in 1939, the story charts the rise of a young New York college 19-year-old drop-out, Fred Rauschenbach, and his fellow aviation cadets— including the brash George Axtell, calm-eyed Richard Day, iron-willed Hugh Russell, the ever-loyal Jack Mathis and others. Together, they chase their dreams of flight, romance, and duty amid the golden age of military aviation. But those dreams collide with the brutal realities of war.

From the humid training fields of Florida to the hellish skies over Okinawa, the men of VMF squadrons fight not only the enemy but fate itself. The story charts their transformation from cocky young flyers to Flight Instructors led by Greg "Pappy" Boyington, to battle-hardened leaders, facing love, loss, and historic combat in the Battle of Okinawa. With rich character arcs, stunning aerial combat, and a deep emotional core, BOYS OF THE BURNING SKY captures the untold story of the Marine Corps’ forgotten few — a generation bound by duty, forged in war, and remembered in the smoke trails of history.

They endure devastating losses, internal rivalries, and the physical and emotional toll of endless combat missions. With every flight, they come face-to-face with mortality — and with the responsibility of leading younger men into the flames of history.

When their Corsairs streak into the blood-red skies over Kakazu Ridge, Shuri Castle, Hacksaw Ridge and Sugarloaf Hill the full weight of their brotherhood, sacrifice, and courage is laid bare. Some will fall. Others will return forever changed. But all will earn their place in the forgotten pages of valor.
