BOYS OF THE BURNING SKY follows a tight-knit group of U.S. Marine Corps aviators whose bond is forged in the flight schools of Pensacola, tested in the cockpits of their F4U-1D Corsairs and proven in the crucible of World War II.

Beginning in 1939, the story charts the rise of a young New York college 19-year-old drop-out, Fred Rauschenbach, and his fellow aviation cadets— including the brash George Axtell, calm-eyed Richard Day, iron-willed Hugh Russell, the ever-loyal Jack Mathis and others. Together, they chase their dreams of flight, romance, and duty amid the golden age of military aviation. But those dreams collide with the brutal realities of war.

From the humid training fields of Florida to the hellish skies over Okinawa, the men of VMF squadrons fight not only the enemy but fate itself. The story charts their transformation from cocky young flyers to Flight Instructors led by Greg "Pappy" Boyington, to battle-hardened leaders, facing love, loss, and historic combat in the Battle of Okinawa.
