DARK ROAD

DARK ROAD
By Richard Lamb

GENRE: Horror
LOGLINE:

A couple with hidden feelings for each other find themselves haunted by a malevolent spirit on the old country road they should never have taken.

SYNOPSIS:

Daniel and Louise, two close friends with hidden romantic feelings for each other, are driving to Cornwall for a haunted weekend. The trip is Louise’s idea. She is a supernatural enthusiast. Daniel, despite his skepticism, has volunteered to join her because he wants to spend time with her.

During the initial drive, they chat and swap ghost stories, and their natural chemistry shines through. A brief stop at a run-down service station, and the characters they encounter, offers sinister glimpses of what is to come.

Back on the road, Daniel, keen to impress Louise, announces a detour through a small village and down a reputedly haunted road. Once there, he stops to relate to Louise the legend of the road and its unwelcoming occupant, Lydia Grantham, who met a cruel and untimely end during its construction.

From this point on the innocent couple are marked, and find themselves pursued by the wrathful, malevolent, spirit of Lydia Grantham. Their attempt to turn around is thwarted, so Louise and Daniel are left with no choice but to travel the road and face the rancorous force intent on harming them.

Louise, with her lifelong desire to discover the truth about ghosts and spirits, finds exactly what she was looking for.

This will not be a happy ending.

In the same vein as Mike Flanagan's work; putting the characters at the forefront before revealing the horror or using the latter as a backdrop. I like when the drama takes more importance in horror than anything.

Thanks, Marcel Jr.. I'm a firm believer that without relatable, strong and/or likable characters, the audience can never truly experience the peril when it comes. It's such a common mistake with the horror genre.
