BETRAYAL IN ALEXANDRIA

BETRAYAL IN ALEXANDRIA
By Nicola Gaughan MA

GENRE: Military/War, Drama
LOGLINE:

In 1920s Alexandria, a haunted war hero is branded a bigamist and a liar. But as he fights a year-long legal battle, he discovers he is the pawn in a deadly cover-up by a British Consulate desperate to hide its own criminal negligence.

SYNOPSIS:

The Setup 1922. Frank Wrench is a man divided. Haunted by the Great War and shivering from recurring bouts of malaria, he flees the suffocating grey of rural Wales, leaving his wife Alice behind. He isn't running to another woman; he is running back to the only place he felt like a hero: Alexandria, Egypt.

The Catalyst While rebuilding his life as a journalist in the heat of the Levant, Frank receives a devastating telegram from a former comrade: Alice is dead. Broken and alone, Frank becomes easy prey for the ambitious Alexandra Mallia and her influential family. Seeing a chance to anchor himself to the world again, Frank marries Alexandra in a ceremony sanctioned and registered by the British Consulate.

The Twist The honeymoon ends with a thunderclap. A letter arrives from Wales—not from a lawyer, but from Alice. She is alive, she is well, and she has been desperately searching for the husband the Consulate claimed they couldn't find.

The Conflict Frank immediately confesses, sends for Alice, and attempts to annul the second marriage. But the British Consulate has a problem: if they admit Frank married in good faith, they admit they ignored Alice’s letters and failed their own due diligence. To save their own reputations, the bureaucrats turn on Frank.

The Climax Five years of peace are shattered when the Consulate reopens the case, determined to make Frank a scapegoat. In a courtroom filled with "lost" documents and coerced silence, Frank must prove his innocence against an Empire that would rather see an honest man in a Malta prison than admit a clerk’s mistake. It is no longer just a trial for bigamy; it is a battle for the truth of a man’s character.
