When an undocumented domestic worker’s dream of buying a used Toyota in LA comes true, her life suddenly plunges into a treacherous world with devastating consequences.

SYNOPSIS:

Lucia Amelia is the Liest family’s housekeeper in Los Angeles, Helmut, a famous psychologist; his bedridden, depressed wife, Margaret; and their daughter, Anna, a popular lifestyle influencer. She is undocumented and has one dream: to buy the red Toyota she passes every morning on her long way to work.

Lucia’s life begins to change when she meets Jesús, a Salvadoran dog groomer, on the bus. Their romance blossoms, and when Jesús surprises her with the red Toyota, Lucia believes her life is finally changing. But the car is bought with drug money, and soon Jesús’s dangerous associate, Billydog, enters their lives, bringing violence and chaos.

Billydog’s obsession with Lucia’s teenage daughter, Alicia, leads to a brutal assault and a wave of retaliation that ends in tragedy. A drive-by shooting leaves Demarcus, Alicia’s boyfriend, wounded, and Alicia vanishes into the city. Lucia’s desperate search ends near the train tracks, where she finds Alicia dead beside Demarcus.

The tragedy exposes fractures in the Liest household. Margaret confronts Helmut for his years of manipulation and helps Lucia arrange the funeral, ignoring Helmut’s objections. Anna exposes her stepfather’s secret voyeuristic act and tells her mother. Margaret reclaims her independence and asks Helmut to move out.

Lucia returns the red Toyota to Jesús, now paralyzed after confronting Billydog, and decides to leave Los Angeles behind. As Margaret resumes her work as a journalist, Lucia boards a bus for Honduras, carrying nothing but the will to begin again.
