SYNOPSIS:

In 1879 Arizona Territory, wounded outlaw Tom Burroughs is taken to the isolated ranch of Claire Martin, who nurses him back to health and gives him something he has never had before: a reason to stay. He abandons his violent past, marries Claire, and builds a quiet life as a rancher and father.

Seven years later, Empire Mining diverts the water sustaining the valley's ranches, hoping to drive settlers from land it wants for itself. When Tom leads the ranchers to a rare legal victory against the company, Empire's owner, Marcus Blackwood, retaliates in secret. Tom's ranch is burned to the ground, and Claire dies saving their six-year-old daughter, Alice.

Devastated by grief, Tom faces a choice between honoring the life Claire helped him build or reclaiming the outlaw he buried years ago. He chooses vengeance. Joined by Claire's brothers, Wade and Jack, and shadowed by Alice, who refuses to leave him, Tom hunts the men responsible for the fire. With each killing, he drifts further from the husband and father he became and closer to the man he once was.

As Tom's quest leaves Wade and Jack dead and Alice increasingly frightened of the father she loves, he finally confronts Blackwood. When Alice begs him to walk away, Tom cannot. He kills Blackwood, is captured, and ultimately hanged for his crimes.

Years later, Alice recalls the father she lost long before the gallows. Though vengeance destroyed him, she carries forward the part of him worth saving. When she has a son of her own, she names him Tom.
