SWITCH
By Derrick Vernon

GENRE: Other, Drama
LOGLINE: On a Georgia plantation, enslaved strategist Josiah “Switch” Reed turns stolen maps, forbidden literacy, and quiet rage into a rebellion, leading his people through fire, blood, and pursuit toward freedom while forcing his masters to learn that names can fight back harder than their chains.

SYNOPSIS:

Switch follows Josiah “Switch” Reed, an enslaved man on the Whitfield Plantation in Georgia whose greatest weapon is not his strength, but his mind. Known as “Switch” because he learned as a child to mentally escape pain before the whip could fully own him, Josiah grows into a quiet strategist who studies everything his masters overlook — ledgers, maps, patrol routes, sale records, and the arrogance of men who believe enslaved people cannot think beyond survival. When Switch discovers that several men, women, and children are about to be sold away, including people he loves, he realizes escape is no longer enough. The plantation must be disrupted from the inside. Using forbidden literacy, stolen maps, hidden intelligence, and the trust of those willing to risk everything, Switch begins planning both a rebellion and a route to freedom. As tensions rise, the cruelty of the plantation grows more violent. Isaiah is brutally punished for a crime he did not commit. Lena is threatened by Silas Crowe. Families prepare to be torn apart. Every injustice pushes Switch closer to action. What began as secret reading and quiet observation becomes a full-scale uprising. On the night of escape, the plantation erupts in fire, chaos, and blood. Ledgers burn. Cotton burns. The records that reduced human beings to property are destroyed. Switch confronts Master Whitfield inside the very study where names were turned into numbers, forcing the man who owned bodies to face the mind he could never control. The enslaved fight their way through flames, dogs, guns, and betrayal, escaping into the night toward the unknown. But freedom is not simple. Switch and the survivors are hunted through woods, rivers, bridges, and rail lines by men determined to drag them back into bondage. Along the journey, they lose loved ones, find allies, and learn that freedom is not only a destination — it is something that must be protected, written down, remembered, and passed on. By the end, Switch reaches the North carrying the names of the people who survived and the memory of those who did not. His journey becomes more than escape; it becomes witness. He writes the truth that slavery tried to erase:We were here. Switch is a historical drama about survival, rebellion, forbidden knowledge, and the unbreakable power of the human mind. It is the story of a man whose body was chained, but whose intelligence became the fire that burned a plantation’s lies to the ground.
