SYNOPSIS:
Matthew Mengele lives a quiet, buttoned-up life: making espresso each morning for his wife Rosie before vanishing into a mundane office job. But when a sext meant for someone else lands in his inbox, Matt’s carefully managed world begins to crack. What follows is a slow, surreal spiral through betrayal, race, repression, and masculinity as Matt uncovers Rosie’s hidden life: not just an affair, but an entire identity kept from him. Unable to process the emotional shock, Matt turns to unlikely confidants, a sex-positive retail worker and a disillusioned coworker, as his internal chaos festers. Confronted by his own religious upbringing, racial anxieties, and sexual insecurity, Matt is forced to face a question: is he angry because he was betrayed, or because he was never truly seen? Societal Advantages is an intimate character study about power, projection, and the illusions we call love.
