THE COACH'S SON
By Gerald Smith

GENRE: Family
LOGLINE:

Josh, young man with autism and savant syndrome, successfully rescues a university’s basketball program from ruin after his father, the head coach, becomes incapacitated.

SYNOPSIS:

Act I: James Coleman, a high school teacher and basketball coach, is super-excited when his son, Josh, is born into the family. He can’t wait to begin training Josh to be a stellar athlete. Josh, an only child, grows up in a household that lives and breathes basketball. James becomes severely depressed and angry when he could see that Josh was “different” and lacked the greatly anticipated athletic skills. Josh and his mother attend all basketball games (both home and away), and as a young boy, Josh would frequently disrupt basketball games when James is coaching the team, drawing even more angst from the coach/father.

Act II: Although it appears that Josh isn’t paying any attention to the game, he would recite individual and team plays and statistics following each game. Eventually, James starts listening and begins using the data provided by Josh to improve his coaching and team’s win-loss record. While watching college basketball games together on TV, Josh would point out many slight nuances missed by James. James eventually has Josh join him to watch scouting films of opposing teams. After several championship seasons with the high school team, James is offered a head coach position at a university. The duo of James and Josh work miracles and the university’s basketball program, turning a constant bottom-in-the-standings team into a vibrant championship contender. An unfortunate accident leaves James incapacitated and unable to coach. The team’s assistant coaches attempt to step in and lead the team, but the team sinks to the bottom of the league. Half-way through the season, Josh is asked to help direct the team and the team rises from last place to eventually play in the championship game. Josh is offered a full-time position working with James after he returns to coaching.

Act III: After a number of consecutive championship seasons, Josh is recruited by other universities to coach his own basketball team.

SPECS: This is a family friendly feature film, likely rated PG (due to some language). This film includes elements of drama and sports action, and should appeal to the same audiences that enjoyed Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995) (a father dealing with his child’s disability), Radio (2003) (individuals with mental disabilities showing interest in sports), and television’s The Good Doctor (2018) (using extraordinary gifts to overcome the skepticism of others).
